The Poinsettia is one of the beloved flowers of the United States . The Poinsettia or Euphorbia Pulcherrima is traditionally known as the Christmas Plant. The Poinsettia is a very beautiful red-flowering plant. The Poinsettia will also flower in different colors such as pink and white.
In most instances, Poinsettias will only flower for one season even though the plant is considered to be a perennial. However, if special care is taken with the Poinsettia Plant, there is a chance it will flower additional seasons. Extensive hybridization in recent years has resulted in much longer flowering period. The new strains of Poinsettias are adding beauty to homes until late in the months of April or May.
The Poinsettia is native to Mexico and was brought to the United States by Dr. Joel Poinsett, the first US ambassador to Mexico . Most Poinsettias used during the Holidays now come from California . The Poinsettia has gained so much notoriety in the United States it has its own recognized and celebrated day. December 12 th is officially recognized as National Poinsettia Day.
